Even though I feel constantly out of the loop when it comes to new music, scrolling through my iPod has reminded me of all the albums released this year that I found myself loving. Much of these albums were listened to in 35 degree weather, walking to work in Taiwan and I know that for the rest of my life, every time I hear any of my favourite music from 2017 I'll be transported back there.

In no particular order, here are the albums I've loved most this year (with a few exceptions where only singles were released).

Pale Waves, Television Romance

Single

When I first heard this track, I put 'Television Romance' on repeat for a couple of hours. It hooked me instantly, for reasons I can't really pin down, but I'm so excited to hear more from Pale Waves in 2018. I need a full-length album, asap.

Lights, Skin&Earth

Favourite Track: Savage

Lights has been one of my favourite musicians for years now. Every time she puts something new out, she's always pushed herself to do better than previously, so much of my year was spent hyped for the release of Skin&Earth. The first single from the album, 'Giants', took me a while to get into, but the vocals on the bridge always had my heart. 'Savage' is the song I can't get out of my head on this album. Lights has never released anything like it before.

Imagine Dragons, Evolve

Favourite Track: Walking the Wire

Imagine Dragons are my go-to when I'm traveling, especially their 2015 album Smoke + Mirrors, so of course this album was going to make my best of list. My favourite thing about it is how different it is to their other two albums while still sounding exactly like you expect Imagine Dragons to sound. I live for musicians who push themselves creatively.

All Time Low, Last Young Renegade

Favourite Track: Life of the Party

It's been a few years since I've truly listened to All Time Low, but Last Young Renegade won me over in a way nothing since Nothing Personal has. Aside from the incredible cover art, I feel like this album is the perfect combination of their original sound and the one they've progressed onto. Lyrically, 'Life of the Party' has to take the spot of my favourite track because I can't get 'somewhere in between/who I used to be/and who I'll be tomorrow' out of my head. It hits me hard.

The Amazons, The Amazons

Favourite Track: Junk Food Forever

I feel like I keep forgetting about this album and then rediscovering it, because every time I see it on my iPod it seems like it's been forever since I last listened to it. Regardless, every time I enjoy every single second of the album. It's easy to get lost in, with each song kind of falling into each other, but it's incredible. You don't listen to The Amazons; you experience them.

As It Is, okay.

Favourite Track: Okay

If we're honest, I'm still 13 years old inside and As It Is is everything I need in a band. I'm not ashamed to say I blast their music when I'm feeling sad. 'Okay' takes the top spot for me, even though it's the obvious choice, because 'I don't know if I've been worse/I don't know if I can change/but right now, I don't think, don't think that I'm okay' is the only lyrics I need to comfort me if I'm feeling low. 'Hey Rachel' is a close second, though.

Paramore, After Laughter

Favourite Track: Idle Worship

Another album where the band have stepped away from the sound associated with them (2017 was the year for it, it seems). I've been eagerly awaiting a new album from Paramore and it couldn't be more perfect. Lyrically, it's still Paramore, just more grown up, which makes perfect sense. It's so hard choosing a favourite song from this album because it changes on the day, but I love everything about the vocals on 'Idle Worship'. Other top tracks include 'Fake Happy'; 'Rose Colored Boy'; 'Pool'; and 'Caught in the Middle'.

John Mayer, The Search For Everything

Favourite Track: Moving On and Getting Over

John Mayer is one of those musicians that I always mean to listen to more often and never do, but The Search For Everything truly brings me so much joy. The way everything comes together - lyrics, instrumentation, vocals - gives me something to strive for whenever I try to make music. I'll always put this on in the background if I'm feeling like I can't write to save my life. 'Moving On and Getting Over' takes top track, because it's just fun.

Oh Wonder, Ultralife

Favourite Track: Ultralife

It might be an obvious choice for the title track to be my favourite, but it was the first one I heard, the first one I learnt to play from this album and the first one I fell in love with, and that hasn't changed. I've loved Oh Wonder since 'All We Do' was played in an episode of MTV's Scream and they're unlike anything else I listen to. I think the reason I like them so much is because everything about all their songs seems so stripped back and simple, even if it isn't. Whenever I listen to Oh Wonder I feel a sense of calm wash over me, and not a lot of music does that.
